"Soli Deo Gloria"? What does that mean?

As we have made this new website for our church, you may have come across our Mission Statement and wondered what the phrase "Soli Deo Gloria" means.

Well, I would like to do my best to explain.

Simply put, Soli Deo Gloria is a Latin Phrase that means "Glory to God alone." It is a phrase that has been used throughout history, particularly in Christian circles, to express the idea that all Glory and Honor belong to God, and God alone.

The phrase can be traced back to the Reformation, a period of religious and cultural upheaval that began in the 16th century. During this time, many Christians were questioning the authority of the Roman Catholic Church and seeking a more personal relationship with God. One of the most influential figures of the Reformation was Martin Luther, a German monk who challenged many of the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church.

Luther believed that salvation came through faith alone, not through good works or the sacraments of the Church. He also believed that all glory and honor belonged to God alone, not to the Church or to human beings. In his writings and sermons, Luther often used the phrase "Soli Deo Gloria" to express this idea.

The phrase became a rallying cry for the Reformers, who sought to bring about a more authentic and personal form of Christianity. It also became a central theme in the music of the period, particularly in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach often inscribed "S.D.G." (the initials for Soli Deo Gloria) at the end of his compositions, as a way of dedicating his music to God.

Today, Soli Deo Gloria is still an important concept in Christianity, particularly in Protestant circles. It reminds believers that all of their accomplishments and successes are ultimately due to God's grace and mercy, and that they should strive to glorify God in all that they do. It is a way of acknowledging God's sovereignty and giving him the praise and honor that He deserves.

The mission here at Eastside Baptist Church is to do just that. Do all things for the Glory of God alone.

My prayer for Eastside is that as we continue to grow in our faith that we will keep this phrase in our hearts and minds and seek to Glorify God in all that we do.

I hope this helps.

Eastside, I love you.
